# Add Base Units

## Overview

Base Units in Paradigm provide the structure for creating scheduled unit enrolments, adding assessments, and all other related data in the system. This knowledge article will give you all the key fields required to successfully create a base unit in Paradigm – and at the same time meet the government reporting requirements. This will also provide the workflows on some of the base unit processes in your business or institution: search, create/add, add attachments, edit, delete, as well as add assessments to base units.

The workflows below aim to address the following business requirements:

* Having a Unit record that will serve as the single source of truth of all scheduled units offered with the unit code
* Defining once and inheriting the base information anytime, e.g. when adding scheduled units each semester
* Creating a Base Unit record directly in Paradigm using all the available fields, *see* [Base Units](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/curriculum-management/record-types/base-units) record type for a list and description of all the available field&#x73;*.*
* Creating Base Unit records in the system efficiently in bulk or via system integration.

## Prerequisite Records

Prior to following the instructions below, the following are assumed to be true:

* The Provider record in the system that owns or offers this unit already exists
* The role of an Educational Unit Provider in the Provider record must also be assigned.&#x20;

Refer to the [Provider](https://app.gitbook.com/o/sKrEpOcwixBOaKMqV0Bh/s/C21t2SaV2eKaLxvtR27D/~/changes/A0JtcJzuSlBYcx0eIFFZ/staff-accounts-and-logins/provider) knowledge base article for the details.

## Workflows

There are various ways you can add Base Unit records to the system. Choose from below the workflow that is applicable to your current business requirements:

## Add Base Units in Bulk

Contact our [Support Team](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/v/training/how-to-get-support/support-options) to discuss more details on the requirements when adding base course records in bulk. The fields available when adding a Base Course record to the system can be found on the [Base Units Record Type](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/curriculum-management/record-types/base-units) page.

If you know the [Import Wizard](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/importing-data/workflows/import-wizard) menu, you can find the template and notes for importing Base Unit records in the system [here](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/importing-data/workflows/bulk-import-by-record-type/base-units). You can also check a brief import demo [here](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/importing-data/workflows/import-wizard/create-a-new-import-profile/examples/import-base-unit-records).

## API Integration

Refer to this documentation - [Paradigm API Integration](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/system-configuration/workflows/api-integration). Contact our [Support Team](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/v/training/how-to-get-support/support-options) to discuss more on this option.

## Add a Base Unit Manually

The instructions below only focus on manually creating a base unit record directly in Paradigm.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**BE ADVISED**:

Before creating a new base unit record, please ensure that the Unit Code doesn't already exist in the system. Duplicate unit code records will cause issues within the system and when running government reporting.
{% endhint %}

1. To check for duplicates, navigate to **Units** > **Search**, enter all possible search criteria about the base unit that you are about to create and click **SEARCH UNIT**.

<figure><img src="https://1246578764-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FC21t2SaV2eKaLxvtR27D%2Fuploads%2FN0xn63iN5tcjWgEINPiG%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=171d755f-5d03-4e58-a10b-24628ab586ed" alt=""><figcaption><p>checking for duplicate of the Base Unit record to be created</p></figcaption></figure>

2. If there are no duplicate records in the system, you can now proceed with adding the new base unit record. Choose **Units** > **Unit Details** > **Add New** menus on the side. This will open the base unit page with all the fields both required and optional will appear.

<figure><img src="https://1246578764-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FC21t2SaV2eKaLxvtR27D%2Fuploads%2F8aNwd8Bfc3RWK77UcYeK%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=c6580d83-fe25-41d1-944e-1d5c8f821b82" alt=""><figcaption><p>Base Unit record fields</p></figcaption></figure>

3. Enter all the required fields and all the available information you have for this base unit.&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
**NOTE**:

Refer to the tables on this [Base Unit](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/curriculum-management/record-types/base-units) record type page for all the sections and fields required and optional with their description – which will guide/help you in adding a new Base Unit record in Paradigm.
{% endhint %}

4. After filling out all the required and available information you have for that Base Unit, click the **SAVE UNIT** button.
5. After saving the Base Unit record, you have the option to add the following to your Base Unit record:
   * **Add Attachments** - If you want to add attachments to your Base Unit record, proceed to the [**Add Attachments to Base Units Workflow**](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/curriculum-management/workflows/manage-base-units/add-attachments-to-base-units)
   * **Add Assessments** - After you have added the Base Unit record, you can proceed to the [**Add Base Assessments to Base Units Workflow**](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/curriculum-management/workflows/manage-assessments-in-base-units/add-base-assessments-to-base-units) if you want to define all possible assessments in the Base Unit level that can easily be associated with Scheduled Units when offering it in the future.
6. &#x20;Repeat the same instructions above if you want to add more Base Unit records associated with a Base Course.

## Are you ready to Schedule the Base Unit?

After you have added the Base Unit record, you can proceed to the [**Add a Scheduled Unit Workflow**](https://docs.silverband.com.au/home/paradigm-knowledge-base/academic-scheduling/workflows/manage-scheduled-units/add-a-scheduled-unit) if you want to offer or schedule the Base Unit record ready for enrolment.
